signed and numbered in pencil on verso, L.L.: 79 Garry Winogrand
Gift of Dr. and Mrs. F. E. McAree
Prints, Drawings, and Photographs
From 1969 to 1972, the Peace marches, Hard Hat rallies, Women’s Lib demonstrations, and Gay Liberation gatherings provided Winogrand with a wealth of highly charged moments to capture on film. [new para] A photojournalist would have focused on the protesters themselves, but Winogrand, a street photographer and a witty observer of people, was more intrigued by the varied reactions to the protest by the crush of reporters, counter-demonstrators, and bystanders who nearly crowd the spokeswoman for the Women’s Liberation Movement out of the picture altogether.
