Prints, Drawings, and Photographs
Muirhead Bone's view is taken from aboard ship off the Mediterranean port of Marseille, the main transshipment point from France to Africa, the Near East and, via the Suez Canal, the French colonies in the Far East. Isolated against the sky in the center is the landmark Notre Dame de la Garde, whose towering gilded statue of the Virgin served as a beacon for mariners.
Following in the tradition of English 19th-century artists, Bone traveled widely in search of picturesque subject matter for his etchings. In the fifteen years following the end of World War I in 1918, Bone visited Italy, Holland, France, Sicily, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United States.
