Gift of Katherine C. Nagler
purchased at a Prada store in London by Katherine Nagler, Indianapolis, Indiana in 2005; given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2011.
Feathers continue to be popular with some of the most renowned contemporary couturiers. However, because of laws that now prohibit the use of feathers from endangered species, designers are allowed to use only the feathers of farm-raised birds.
Peacock feathers were individually attached by hand to the front of this skirt. Prada was looking for a certain freedom from her signature look of minimal ladylike clothing in her spring 2005 collection. She designed the new collection around "a vague idea of birds; birds of vanity, like peacocks, parrots and swans," which was a starting point for change in the direction of that season’s line.
