In the 1920s the fashionable silhouette was often shapeless and tubular. The waistline was dropped and the hemline was raised. Even though the "flapper" style did not emerge until 1926, the dresses from the 1920s are referred to as "flapper style."
It is often assumed that all dresses were short during the '20s. However, skirts were at their shortest length only between 1926 and 1928, when the whole leg, up to the knee, was exposed. By 1929, uneven hems and asymmetrical hemlines helped the transition to longer skirts.
