Makonde people

Depictions of Europeans or Africans in European dress are often termed "colonials."  In some instances, as is probably the case with this carving, those figures were made for local Africans of affluence and for Europeans.

This figure portrays an African, probably a Makonde policeman, in a uniform inspired by the Portuguese colonial rulers of Mozambique.

Donated by (Thomas D. Slater, Indianapolis) to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2001
