御厩河岸
from the series 100 Famous Views of Edo 名所江戸百景
The twilight scene here is looking eastward across the Sumida River on a part of the river between Azuma and Ryōgoku Bridges. Until the 1790s, official government horse stables were located on the far bank, and the district came to be called in Japanese Ommayagashi (Stables Embankment). Two "nighthawks," the lowest level of prostitutes, stand in the ferry boat, accompanied by their seated male bodyguard. Their thick makeup served to hide wrinkles or skin conditions.
