John Gaskin Purchased by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1990. {1} One of a group of twenty-five caricatures (four by Maratta, others by Mola and Annabale Carracci) engraved in 1742 by Arthur Pond. See H. M. Hake, Print Collector's Quarterly IX, 1922, page 325.
The fine art of caricature dates to Leonardo da Vinci and thereafter it was a fashionable pastime for such inventive draftsmen as the celebrated Italian religious painter Carlo Maratta.
When Pond engraved the drawing in 1742 for inclusion in his portfolio of 25 reproductions of caricatures by leading European artists, the original was in the possession of the London collector Richard Houlditch.
