With his move to New York in 1925, Avery began working with the simplified forms, flat colors, and often somber tones exemplified in this work.
He was strongly influenced by Matisse despite the fact that he, unlike most American Modernists, never studied in Europe. The works of Matisse were being avidly collected and widely reproduced in the US by 1930.
