- These medals are dedicated to Dionysus, the mythological Greek god of wine and revelry, depicted on the obverse with grapes tumbling from his hair and a kylix, a shallow Greek cup used at banquets. Two fauns, with pointed ears and goat legs, dance upon grapes in a vat on the reverse side.
- A subject from Greek mythology was a logical choice for Manship, who was inspired by Classical Greek and Roman sculpture. He himself described this work as “subtly humorous” and symbolic of “certain restraints of the times”—a clear reference to the United States’ prohibition era, which lasted from 1920 to 1933.
