James Peale's likeness of Revolutionary War officer Thomas Humphrey Cushing is typical of his best technique. Peale passed his skills on to his daughter Anna whose portrait is similar to her father's natural flesh tones and firm drawing style.

Miniature portraits have been used as mementos since ancient times.
