Gallery Labels
Harps with a curved neck, topped with a human or animal head, and long sound box with two circular openings are shared by the Mangbetu and other peoples with whom the Zande interacted during their expansion southward in the 1800s. These harps are used by traveling musicians, accompanying singers or poets. They may also have served as status symbols for wealthy individuals.
