This dress was worn at the wedding of the donor’s mother, Maria Howland Conwell Thayer. The low neckline and open sleeves indicate that a sheer garment was probably worn underneath at the time of the wedding. There is a classical simplicity to the gown.

Maria Howland Conwell Thayer, Indiana (?) (1); Laurel Conwell Thayer, Indiadianapolis; given to Indianapolis Museum of Art (1939).
(1) worn by Maria Howland Conwell Thayer at her wedding in 1870. Maria Conwell Thayer is the mother of Laurel Conwell Thayer
