Beginning in 1925, Locke taught lithography at the Art Students League in New York, the first art school in the United States where the medium could be learned.
Since the preparatory drawing and the lithograph are in the same orientation, Locke must have reversed the drawing on the lithographic stone so that, in printing, it would match the drawing.
