In this crisp, precisely rendered watercolor, arcs of vibrant color intersect with shafts of pale white and a glowing yellow circle. This network of overlapping planes reflects the artist’s fascination with the behavior of color and light.
Moholy-Nagy was attracted to the geometric abstraction pursued by Russian avant-garde painters of the early 20th century. An ardent advocate of the role of technology in the arts, in 1923 he joined the faculty of the Bauhaus in Germany, a school dedicated to the integration of art and industry. In 1937 he continued his influential teaching career in the United States.
Devoted to the study of optical phenomena, Moholy-Nagy also experimented with the camera, making photographs that explored issues of light, form, and transparency.
