Two black-and-white portraits of the same woman, the late modern dancer Isadora Duncan, appear side by side. The portrait on the left, slightly larger in size, is softly and delicately depicted, lending the image a sense of age. In contrast, the portrait on the right appears distorted and faded, calling attention to the extreme differences between the juxtaposed images.
Daryl Trivieri combines diverse techniques such as airbrushing, drawing, scratching, and incising to achieve rich and intricately rendered images. Embracing an unfinished appearance in his paintings, Trivieri makes use of such techniques as a means of emulating nineteenth-century photography while also reacting against the trends in photorealism that emerged during the 1970s.
