Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Eiteljorg
(Mamadou Koita, New York, New York); sold on 12 June 1976 to Harrison Eiteljorg [1903-1997] of Indianapolis, Indiana; given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields in 1989.
Important male ancestors may be honored with wooden ram heads. These heads are kept on altars where they provide a link between living family members and the deceased. The ram is a common animal of sacrifice in Western Africa and is often associated with ancestors.
