John G. Rauch [1890-1976], Indianapolis, Indiana by 1947; {1} given to the John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, in 1948. {1} John G. Rauch was a prominent Indianapolis lawyer and civic leader, who gave many works of art to the Indianapolis Museum of Art beginning in the 1940s until his death. He is known to have purchased some items in New York, both at auction and from Max Safron, but the prior owner of this painting after Greuze's famous composition is undocumented.
