Mr. George Dixon [1908-1969] and Mrs. Isabel J. Dixon, Asheville [b. 1908];{1} Gift of Isabel J. Dixon to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, 1974.{2} {1} The large paintings may have served as the decorations of a room in Zealandia, a historic estate built in 1889 and purchased by the Dixons in 1961, although this has not been verified. The house and its surrounding properties (including a museum called the "Asheville Art Museum" and opened in 1930 by a previous owner Philip S. Henry) were remodelled during the early course of the estate's history and it is possible that the canvases date to that time. For information on the various owners of Zealandia see, Nancy Brower, "Auction begins at Zealandia," Asheville Citizen-Times, 8 August 1973 and W.C. Burton, "More on the proprietors of Asheville's Zealandia," Greensboro Daily News, 9 September 1973. {2} Temporary Receipt No. 0017.
