Deaccessioned 6.18.2008

Recieving Party: Christie's New York

Transfer Notes

Transferred to Christie's New York; Sold on 2/9/2009 in the Interiors sale (lot 39)

Sold at (Lepke, Berlin, Germany) in 1927.{1} Mrs. William H. Conroy, Indianapolis, Indiana, by 1959; given to the John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, in 1959 (59.25). {1} The art historian Fritz Heinemann attributed this painting to Damiano Mazzo of Titian's studio, and noted that it had been sold at (Lepke, Berlin) in 1927, as per correspondence from 1976 in IMA Historical File (59.25). Indeed, lot. 135 (illustration) in Rudolph Lepke's Kunst-Auctions-Haus, Berlin, Gemälde Alter Meister XV. bis XVIII. Jahrhundert aus Englischem und Österreichischem Sammlerbesitz, 29 March 1927, is this painting, then attributed to "Tintoreto". (Painting conservator, David Miller, notes that the photograph in the auction catalogue wsa taken of this painting in a heavily overpainted state; since that time much of the overpainting has been removed.) A partially illegible custom's stamp on the back saying "Zollamt B…(illegible)" indicates that this painting passed through German-speaking Europe.
