Possibly Mrs. Lyne Stephens (better known as the actress, Mademoiselle Duvernay), London.{1} Possibly Edward R . Bacon, Esq. [1846-1915], New York.{2} (Max Safron, New York); to Jo C. Johnston, Greensburg, Indiana, probably by 1952;{3} to his heirs, Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Johnston, Greensburg, Indiana; purchased by the IMA with funds from the Alliance in 1976 (76.238). {1}This provenance is recorded in a small exhibition guide "From Baroque to Fauvewhen this painting was shown alongside other recent acquisitions in French painting at the IMA in 1978. However, the source for this information is unknown. This painting was not included in the Mrs. Lyne Stephens Estate Sale held at Christie’s, London, in May 1895. {2}This provenance from an unknown source is also recorded in the above mentioned exhibition guide. This painting is not included in the Memorial Catalogue of Paintings by Old and Modern Masters collected by Edward R. Bacon, New York, 1919. {3} A note sent by Safron to Jo C. Johnston, postmarked “1952”, requesting payment for an unspecified object(s) is included in the IMA Johnston donor file.
