Hope (Sarahanne Adams Hope), Bloomington, Indiana, by January 1947; given to the John Herron Art Institute, Indianapolis, Indiana, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, in 1947 in memory of William Ray Adams {2}; IMA deaccessioned June 2008; Sale 2135 (Christie's, New York, New York), 28 January 2009, lot 251.

{1} Correspondence by IMA with Brandt in November 1947 indicates only that he purchased this painting "from a small dealer or agent," IMA Historical File (47.3). Several branded stamps appear on the stretcher: a "360" below which appears a stylized "P"; there is also a "3."
