Transferred to Christie's New York; Sold on 1/28/2009 in the Important Old Master Paintings sale 2135 (lot 251)
(Mortimer Brandt Gallery, New York, New York, associated with W.E. Duits, London, England) at an unknown date and as a painting by Juan Sanchez Cotan;{1} Mrs. Henry R. Hope (Sarahanne Adams Hope), Bloomington, Indiana, by January 1947; given to the John Herron Art Institute, Indianapolis, Indiana, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, in 1947 in memory of William Ray Adams {2}; IMA deaccessioned June 2008; Sale 2135 (Christie's, New York, New York), 28 January 2009, lot 251. {1} Correspondence by IMA with Brandt in November 1947 indicates only that he purchased this painting "from a small dealer or agent," IMA Historical File (47.3). Several branded stamps appear on the stretcher: a "360" below which appears a stylized "P"; there is also a "3." {2} William Ray Adams was the father of Sarahanne Adams Hope
