Altdorfer's 1513 series of miniature woodcuts known as "The Fall and Redemption of Man," or more briefly as "The Passion Series," was a direct challenge to Albrecht Dürer's "Small Passion" series of woodcuts, published in 1511, which were three times as large.

Altdorfer's series was so artfully conceived and so minutely carved that it could have served no practical purpose except to print connoisseurs for whom it was likely created.

Purchased with money from the Daniel P. Erwin Fund for the John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art, in 1932.
