Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Lilly
Asian Art (Chinese and other Asian)
Japanese collection*; [Howard Hollis]. Eli Lilly, Indianapolis, Indiana (in October 1950 list $6,000.) (J. Mayuyama in a 26 March 1951 letter mentions this as being bought from Hollis suggesting Hollis got it from him?) *from notes in 19 October 1950 list; given to the John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, in 1960.
菩薩立像
This figure holds a fly whisk in its right hand and a holy water bottle in its left. Both objects are typical of bodhisattva images and do not provide enough information for a specific identification. The pose suggests that this figure stood as part of a triad, to the right of a central figure. The casting is of high quality, and it is possible that the jewelry once contained colorful inlays in the circular settings.
