Commissioned by the Indianapolis Museum of Art and purchased via Gladstone Gallery, New York in 2011.
For Body in Flight (Delta), Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla made a full-scale reproduction of a business class airline seat in carved and stained poplar. The artwork becomes complete when activated by a female gymnast. The gymnast performs a routine developed by Allora & Calzadilla, Olympic gymnast Dave Durante, and choreographer Rebecca Davis. This routine, which emphasizes flexibility and fluidity, destabilizes the rigorous field of competitive gymnastics, contaminating signature gymnastics movements with elements of modern dance choreography.
Body in Flight (Delta) was one of six new works commissioned by the IMA for the US Pavilion at the 2011 Venice Biennale.
