• Peploe is remembered as one of the "Scottish Colourists," a group of Scottish painters influenced by French art in their use of vibrant color. Here, Peploe creates a dramatic contrast between the cool background and the warm tones of the fruit and flowers.
• Peploe’s block-like brush strokes, and his emphasis on geometric shapes and the angular features of the roses, all suggest his admiration for Cézanne.
• Peploe dedicated most of his career to still-life painting, believing that "there is so much in mere objects, flowers, leaves, jugs, what not––colours, forms, relation––I can never see mystery coming to an end."
