Asian Art (Japanese and Korean)
(Ashikaga ginu tezome no Murasaki junigatsu no uchi 足利絹手染紫)
The work is related to a genre called "Genji pictures" (Genji-e 源氏絵), which enjoyed a burst of popularity in the 1800s with the publication of The Rustic Genji, written by Ryūtei Tanehiko and illustrated by Kunisada. Set in the 1400s, the story is about the hero Mitsuuji, a son of the Ashikaga shogun who is working to thwart his father's enemies. His mission requires him to take on the guise of an amorous playboy. The episodes roughly mimic the episodes of Lady Murasaki's Prince Genji in her famous novel of around 1000.
Though the print is faded somewhat, the delicate color harmonies are quite attractive. In the background, pockets of mist nestle between mountain peaks that are punctuated by tall evergreens. The up-and-down rhythm of the trees and figures especially enliven the panoramic view.
Though it is now barely visible, blind printing-also known as embossing or gauffrage-is used for the sleeves and collars and also the horse's hair. The white capes have an embossed hemp texture. These surface-enhancing techniques indicate the deluxe quality of the printing.
