Collection of Madame Ernestine Schumann-Heink [1861-1936] {1}; (Sotheby Parke Bernet, Inc, New York); purchased by the Indianapolis Museum of Art 1976. {1} Ernestine Shumann-Heink nee Rossler was a Bohemian born opera contralto and is the inspiration for the buxom opera singer trope in American popular culture. She was forced to return to the stage after losing her fortune in the 1929 stock market crash, and was forcued to continue preforming until 1932
