From 1969 to 1972, the Peace marches, Hard Hat rallies, Women’s Lib demonstrations, and Gay Liberation gatherings provided Winogrand with a wealth of highly charged moments to capture on film. [new para] A photojournalist would have focused on the protesters themselves, but Winogrand, a street photographer and a witty observer of people, was more intrigued by the varied reactions to the protest by the crush of reporters, counter-demonstrators, and bystanders who nearly crowd the spokeswoman for the Women’s Liberation Movement out of the picture altogether.
