山水図
Tall trees in the foreground are separated from distant mountains by an expanse of water, an empty pavilion, and a total absence of figures. All reference the Yuan dynasty master Ní Zàn (1301–1374), who painted countless variations on this same basic composition.
Wú Róngguāng specialized in Chinese history, and as a scholar he was versed in calligraphy and painting. A successful bureaucrat, he later became governor of Hunan in 1831. He retired in 1840 to his native Canton and devoted the rest of his life to scholarship. His major work was Lìdài míngrén niánpŭ, which contains the names and posthumous titles for major historical figures from the start of the Han dynasty (202 BCE) to 1843.
