Oberwesel on the Rhine

Joseph M. Turner (English, 1775-1851)

For Turner’s annual summer sketching tour of 1839, he crossed the English Channel and descended the Mosel River to Coblenz where it joins the Rhine. He then headed south to Oberwesel and Mainz.

Though he had sketched the town of Oberwesel from the riverbank on his 1817 Rhine tour, in 1839 he scaled the heights to take this sketch featuring the famous Ox Tower on the left, Schönburg Castle on its hill above the town in the middle distance and the deep valley of the Rhine fading into a blue mist in the far distance.
