The wood frame of this sofa has elegant, gently sweeping curves. The bowed profile of the back and seat add shape and variety to the generous proportions of the sofa, which is supported by slender, curved legs. Decoration is limited to carved incisions along the wood rails and floral details at the hips of the legs. Overall, the characteristics are in keeping with the simplicity of Hepplewhite designs, but the taste for curved lines betrays the influence of French Louis XV furniture. These influences are combined to create a work that is both graceful and reserved. - ("Eighteenth-Century Furniture Design," May 23, 2009—February 21, 2010, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Conant Galleries)
