Like two fighter jets zeroing in on a foe, the sparrows are in intense pursuit of their prey. Koson was one of the foremost Japanese designers of bird-and-flower prints (kachō-e), yet little is known about his career. He probably studied under Suzuki Kason (1860–1919) and then later collaborated with several print publishers to create works for export to the United States, where there was a growing interest in traditional Japanese art. In 1912 he changed his name to Shōson, and in later life he took the name of Hōson 豊邨.
