Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Eiteljorg
(Jerry Mulholland, Cincinnati, OH) sold on August 1, 1986 to Harrison Eiteljorg [1903-1997] of Indianapolis; donated to the IMA 1989
This exquisite gown, made from thirteen narrow strips of hand-woven indigo-dyed cotton, is elaborately embroidered in the front and back using locally spun cotton and imported wool yarns.
Seven bands adorned with diamonds in white, red, and light and dark blue decorate the entire length from front to back. Other motifs strategically placed in the center front and back have significant symbolism and are considered talismanic, with powers to protect and bless the wearer.
