The identity and lineage of this court lady were probably written in a brief biography that was once attached above the painting. She is positioned in front of a free-standing screen that depicted flowing water, but because this scroll was trimmed at both sides, the sides of the screen are now gone.
During the Ming dynasty, a first wife had the same status as her husband; the square rank badge that she wears indicates that her husband was a military official of aristocratic rank. Judging by the style of the badge, the phoenix hairpins with pendant beads, and the carved lacquer chair and table, she probably lived some time around 1600.
