This scene depicts the lively commotion of a festival. Portable shrines ("omikoshi") set upon platforms made from planks and laid across two boats tied side by side identify this as the festival of the Hiyoshi Shrine in Shiga Prefecture. Since only three of the seven portable shrines involved are depicted, the others may have appeared on a partner to this screen.
Ropes tied to cut bamboo trees form sacred perimeters for the shrines, and men clad in samurai armor dance merrily around the shrines to the beat of drums. Other boats carry sacred horses, a Shintô priest, and onlookers who feast and drink as they enjoy the spectacle.
