Hawks were traditionally a favorite subject of Japanese painters because of their popularity among the samurai class. Fierce, perceptive, quick and powerful, hawks manifested qualities dear to warriors. These 20th-century works still seem to capitalize on those qualities. Bold strokes of pigment, sharp angles, and the close-up view of a male and female with their brood at the top of what must be a very tall tree serve to heighten the dramatic power of the presentation.
