A distinct characteristic of Shirvan kilims is the absence of borders. The majority of these rugs are composed of wide and narrow horizontal bands filled with simple, bold geometric patterns.
The wide bands contain hexagons with hooked motifs on the outside and diamonds containing a cross in the inside. Some of the narrow bands are plain, while others are decorated with triangles, small stepped diamonds and zigzags.
