新古今和歌集
Folding fans are a long-standing favorite format for painting and calligraphy in East Asia. The arrangement of the fans here suggests being blown in the wind—a reference to fanning and cooling. Or they may be floating on water, alluding to the practice by Japanese court ladies of writing poems on fans and letting them float downstream. The poems come from an anthology that contained both contemporary and ancient verse.
Throughout Asian history, fine calligraphy has been regarded as the most important accomplishment of a cultured person. Iijima Kimie began her study of calligraphy in her spare time as a means of self-improvement.
