Shawl

Indian

This exquisitely embroidered shawl is one of the highlights of the IMA's collection. The sunburst medallion has its origins in Persian carpet design. The sunburst pattern, which is also depicted in the decorations of domes in mosques, symbolizes a doorway into heaven.

The black center contains meandering arches and scroll-like motifs, which create movement within the field. Clusters of botehs (paisleys) are gathered within arches in the main border.
