These types of capes were worn by military and civilian officials during commemorative and religious festivals in Ethiopia. The shape of the tunic, with its four long hanging flaps, is suggestive of an animal pelt. In the past these types of tunics were made from lion skins and manes. It was believed that furs or skins of powerful animals embodied their supremacy and power—qualities that were hoped to be transmitted to the wearer.
