For many artists like Sheeler, the massive geometry of the New York skyline was the essence of modernity. As in this print, the precision and symmetry of such structures were points of emphasis in Sheeler’s paintings and photographs.
An encounter with Cézanne’s work in Paris in 1908 moved Sheeler’s painting style toward geometric abstraction.
Sheeler also expressed his admiration for the skyscraper in Manhatta, a short film he produced in 1921 with a fellow Stieglitz protégé, the photographer Paul Strand.
