Mr. and Mrs. Michael Jaffé [Michael Jaffé, 1923-1997], Cambridge, England, by 1968 to 1971; (through Thomas Agnew & Sons Ltd., London, 1971); Purchased by the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1971 (1971.176){3}.

{1} The cradle of the painting is, according to David Miller, IMA Senior Painting Conservator, mid to late 19th century. The painting's reverse has a red wax seal stamp of the Batthyány-Strattmann family (a crown over an interlaced "B" and "S"). This seal, according to D. Miller, was placed on the painting after the cradle, which dates it to mid-19th century or later. Since we know historically that the Batthyány-Strattmann art collection was greatly expanded in the mid-19th century we can propose that it was in the family's collection since at least this time and then passed by inheritance to the heirs of the "Prince" title and Körmend Castle, the family seat. Thus it may have been owned by Prince Phillip Batthyány-Strattmann (1781-1870), then Prince Odon (or Edmund) Batthyány-Strattmann (1826-1914), son of previous, to Prince Dr. Seligen Ladislaus (or László) Batthyány-Strattmann (1870-1931), nephew of previous, and may have passed to Prince Ladislaus Anton Batthyány-Strattm (1904-1966), son of previous, upon his father's death. The back of the painting bears a paper label which states, "Ladislaus Prince Batthyány -Strattmann Chateau de Kormend Hongrie" (written in French). The label has no date and it is not conclusive as to which Prince Ladislaus it refers to. An Austrian customs stamp, affixed to an object when it leaves the country, is present on the back of the painting. According to Prof. Dr. Theodor Buckler, archivist at the Osterreichisches Bundesdenkmalamt, Vienna, Austria, (in correspondence with the IMA, 2007) the "Bundesdenkmalamt" stamp shows that the painting went through Austria at some point between 1920-1934 or after 1945 (these dates correspond to the usage of this particular stamp). The stamp could have been on the painting when acquired by the Batthyány-Strattmann family, or upon transfer out of the collection.
{2} This provenance was given by Michael Jaffé, British art historian and collector, who later owned and published the painting in 1968. The dates of Baron Leon Janssen's ownership are not known. The Baron died in 1938. A catalogue of an estate sale in Baarn, Holland, of three aristocrats' art collections, including Baron Janssen, was published on August 4, 1942 (not yet consulted). It is not known if the painting, Jupiter with the Thunderbolt, was included in this sale. The German Nazis occupied Belgium and the Netherlands from 1940 to 1945 and it is known that many artworks were taken out of Belgium during these years by the Germans and also by Belgian dealers working with the Germans.
