With its swirling acrobat, flowers, and diverse combination of animals, Trapeze has the motifs known to be among Chagall's favorite imagery.
This ink and wash drawing is a study for an oil painting of the circus, finished the following year. The drawing, however, is a highly resolved composition and demonstrates that while Chagall is renowned for his vibrant color, he also worked highly successfully in degrees of black and white.
The dynamic composition exemplifies Chagall's ability to defy gravity and reason in creating his whimsical fantasies.
