Marin lived on Cape Split in Maine, where he thrived on recording the changes to sky, sea, and land that surrounded him.
The artist took enormous pleasure in manipulating the medium of watercolor. Here the transparency of the sea contrasts with the density of the rocky beach.
The jagged shoreline also reflects Marin’s attraction to the angular shapes common to Cubist compositions.
