  • This composition’s deliberate lack of polish calls attention to the decrepit car parked under a sun-bleached awning. Consumed by rust and license plate askew, the automobile suggests the economic uncertainty of the Great Depression. Leisure activities, such as recreational motoring, were luxuries of a more prosperous time.
  • Pène du Bois studied at the New York School of Art under William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. The topical subject matter of Garage follows the teachings of Henri, who encouraged his pupils to interpret the realities, however bleak, of daily life.
