For three winters, Turner and his friend Thomas Girtin were employed to make copies of the drawings of John Robert Cozens, which were in keeping with Dr. Thomas Monro.
Copying Cozens gave the two artists invaluable lessons in the rendering of the sublime scenery of Switzerland and Italy that they had yet to visit.
