A merry company revels with music and wine in a canalhouse in Amsterdam, a thriving city whose citizens enjoyed great prosperity during the 17th century. The darkened chamber contrasts with the sunny scene in the background and emphasizes the shimmering satin gowns. The architecture here mirrors that of the interior of the grand Amsterdam Town Hall, with its classicizing pilasters and garlands, rounded archway, and geometric marble floor.

The division of clearly defined spaces with doorkijkes (views through one area into another) visible here was a favorite technique among 17th-century Dutch painters.
