The scene is related to the Tale of Genji, written by Lady Murasaki around the year 1000 and widely considered to be the world's first novel. This great literary classic provided an endless source of material for later Japanese art. Kunisada and his pupils were at the forefront of a boom in Genji popularity in the latter 1800s.
This triptych demonstrates Kunisada's skill as a draftsman through the handling of both the straight-line geometric patterns and the fluid lines of the kimono decoration and shōji marble effect.
The impression is good, with sharp lines and fine registration of the colors. The paper is badly discolored overall, adding a yellowish "patina"to the work that interferes with-but does not negate-the fine graphic qualities of the piece.
The margins of the prints have been trimmed, maybe to clean up tattered edges or to fit the prints into a frame. Trimming a print seriously affects its market value in the eyes of dealers and collectors, but for museums, where works are usually not resold, the reduced prices can provide bargains.
