The Sumō Wrestler Takaragawa Ishigorō

Utagawa Yoshitora (Japanese)

寶川石五郎

Sumō fans desired portraits of their favorite wrestlers. They could be portrayed fully dressed in kimono and sporting a sword, or as here, as they appeared in the ring. Massive and muscled, the sumōka stands with bulging feet spread, huge hands, protruding belly, and piled-up shoulders hiding his neck.
